Feast day · July 8
Saint Edgar, King of England
Edgar was King of the English from 959 to 975, during a period of relative peace and consolidation of royal power. He is remembered chiefly for his strong support of the Benedictine monastic reform movement, working closely with Saint Dunstan, Saint Æthelwold, and Saint Oswald to restore and strengthen monastic life throughout England. His patronage helped establish discipline and learning in English monasteries according to continental reform ideals. He died in 975 and was buried at Glastonbury Abbey. Veneration of Edgar as a holy king developed in English monastic circles in recognition of his service to the Church.
